This morning it was announced that the movie "Emancipation" produced by Apple and starring Will Smith will be set to move its filming location out of Georgia as it was originally planned. The movie is set to be a "thriller" that depicts the story of a runaway slave. The idea of filming in Georgia in the first place was conceived as a way to potentially film "on location" in many historic sites that marked the era. The production of the movie though announced its plans to move the location due to the recent voting law passed in the state of Georgia.

The Law In Question

There are a lot of different guidelines for voting regulations that are contemplated in this new law. Of course, going over all of them isn't necessarily our forte here. One of the main points though that critics of the law have cited is the fact that the number of ballot boxes to drop off mail-in ballots will be considerably reduced for the 2022 election process.

There are other restrictions being contemplated on programs and voting methods that were sent in place to increase voter participation. These new regulations have garnered negative backlash from companies and now the entertainment world.

Production Planning Louisiana Move

There is no official word as to what the production of the film plans to do. Deadline, who first reported that the move was taking place, speculates that the production of the movie could move to Louisiana.

That particular move would seem to make a lot of sense in many regards. Without a doubt, Louisiana is another state that would allow the production to film on historic sites from the time that the movie is trying to represent. By most accounts, that's why they wanted to film in Georgia in the first place.

The Production's Comments On The Matter

Although Will Smith has not directly spoken out on the matter the production did release an official statement regarding the matter. The main issue that they seem to have is that they don't want to be providing revenue for a state that is promoting laws that they view as regressive. Part of the statement released by the production reads,

"At this moment in time, the Nation is coming to terms with its history and is attempting to eliminate vestiges of institutional racism to achieve true racial justice. We cannot in good conscience provide economic support to a government that enacts regressive voting laws that are designed to restrict voter access."

At the time of writing this article, Will Smith has yet to release a personal statement on the matter. This is something that is not sitting all that well with some of the fans. As he certainly has had time to upload other things to his Instagram account.

For now, it looks like Will is a bit more preoccupied with promoting his upcoming new Bad Boys film. Instead of making a statement on a much more serious topic like the filming of "Emancipation" pulling out of Georgia.
