"Well, I didn't realize that I was gay growing up," she told the show's host Alice Pieszecki. "Which, looking back is a big shock. I didn't really figure it out for myself until college."

Rapinoe said she grew up in a conservative, small town and being openly gay wasn't really accepted at that time.

"There wasn't a lot of, hey, there's this, you know, mommy and daddy option or this mommy and mommy options, or this daddy and daddy option," she said. "So yeah, we had some confusion early on."

Rapinoe said she was able to "spread [her] wings" when she arrived at the University of Portland to play soccer. "I pretty quickly found out that I was gay," she added

"Well, I came out first [to my mom]," Rapinoe. "I told my mom, and Rachael wasn't there, but then I told my mom about Rachael, too. Well, I didn't want her to have to take on the responsibility," she added.

She also recently made the public announcement that she is endorsing Elizabeth Warren for President.

"I truly believe the best things in life are a result of being bold and being real," she wrote on Instagram. "This extends to every part of my life and nothing feels more relevant and real than this election. I’m proud to endorse @elizabethwarren today, for being bold, for being real, for listening to ALL of us, and for being prepared to navigate the unique challenges we face today as a country."
